Barbara explains that since Dennis' father was not around, his father took on the role of husband in his life.
Over time, they developed a close relationship, took care of each other like brothers, and even met people who matched their "gender". But as life takes them on different paths, they lose their bond.
Dennis did not reveal his feelings to Barbara until later in the speech. He admits that he likes her but refuses because they are like brothers.
After informing their families and getting their approval, they started dating and eventually got married. .
